HAMMOND – The Community Music School at Southeastern Louisiana University will
present a concert titled Shining Stars on Saturday, Nov. 6, at 10:30 a.m. in Pottle
Music Building Auditorium. The concert will feature the eight winners of the CMS Concerto
Competition as soloists and the CMS Strings Orchestra accompanied by the Southeastern
Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Orchestra Director and Assistant Professor
of Violin Victor Correa-Cruz.
Director of the Community Music School Jivka Duke said the winners for the same
concerto competition who placed first through fourth will be honored as soloists with
the Southeastern Symphony Orchestra on Dec. 1 at 7 p.m. in Pottle Auditorium. They
will perform violin concertos by Mozart, Bach, Beriot and Vivaldi.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for our young and talented students to be soloists
of an orchestra at such a young age; our soloists’ ages are 9 through 15. The program
on Nov. 6 will include concertos for two violins and four violins by Bach and Vivaldi,
as well as a few violin solo and piano solo pieces,” Duke said. “We will also have
our CMS Strings Orchestra join Southeastern’s college orchestra in three orchestral
selections.”
“We are very thrilled to have so many students who show such ambition and dedication
to their music studies and to the art of music performance,” Duke continued. “Their
success speaks volumes to the high expertise our instructors bring to the table and
the hard work they put in week after week. Many thanks to Dr. Cruz and the Southeastern’s
college orchestra for their support and their role in making this event a true celebration
of talent and creativity.”
