Southeastern Louisiana University’s Columbia Theatre for the Performing Arts will present TheaterWorksUSA in “Pete the Cat.” Scheduled for two performances March 27 at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. in the downtown Hammond theatre, the family musical is based on the popular series by Kimberly and James Dean.
“For Pete the Cat, life is an adventure no matter where you wind up. So the minute the groovy blue cat meets the Biddles, he gets the whole family rocking,” said Columbia Theatre Artistic Director Jim Winter. “That is, except for young Jimmy Biddles, the most organized second grader on planet Earth. However, when Jimmy draws a blank in art class during the last week of school, it turns out Pete is the perfect pal to help him. Together they set out on a mission to help Jimmy conquer second grade art, and along the way, they both learn a little something about new inspiration. Join Jimmy and Pete on an adventure of friendship all the way to Paris and back in a VW bus.”
TheaterWorksUSA has led the Theater for Young and Family Audiences movement in New York City and across North America for over half a century. Since 1962, the organization has captured the imaginations of 100 million new and veteran theatergoers with an award-winning repertoire of over 130 original plays and musicals. Acclaimed alumni include Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez (Disney’s Frozen), Jerry Zaks (The Music Man), Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (Dear Evan Hansen), Joe Iconis (Be More Chill), Daphne Rubin-Vega (Rent), and Kathleen Chalfant (Angels in America).
“For the evening performance, the Columbia Theatre is partnering with Tangipahoa Parish Library for a special pre-show event,” Winter added. “The theatre lobby will open at 5 p.m. and will feature play and reading zones for children coming to the 7 p.m. show.”
Ticket prices are $20 for adults and $13 for students and are available at the Columbia Theatre box office, located at 220 E. Thomas Street in downtown Hammond, or by calling 985-543-4371.
A special Southeastern student ticket price of $10 is available, while supplies last. Students must present their Southeastern IDs at the Columbia box office to receive the discounted price. Additionally, all Southeastern faculty, retired faculty or university staff with ID may purchase one ticket for the concert and receive one ticket at half price.
