Cameron Boyd “CB” Barr (class of ’70 and ’71) was a strong supporter of and friend to Southeastern, from his days as a student on campus until his passing on December 9, 2020, at the age of 73.
Cameron earned both a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Southeastern, where he was a member of the Sigma Tau Gamma fraternity, as well as a master’s degree in public health from Tulane University. Most importantly, Southeastern was where Cameron met his wife Marcia Comeaux Barr. The two shared a full life together, filled with cherished moments with their two children, six grandchildren, and other family and friends; a passion for both travel and Major League Baseball, which resulted in visits to every baseball park in America; and a love of Southeastern and commitment to enhancing educational opportunities for others.
Together they established the Marcia C. Barr Endowed Scholarship in Kinesiology and The Marcia and Cameron Barr First-Generation Endowed Scholarship, which will continue in perpetuity to impact countless students. Cameron once said of this, “It is our hope that the students who eventually receive our scholarship will treasure their education and will then, in turn, give back to the University, benefiting future generations of students.”
Cameron also gave back to Southeastern as an active member and supporter of the Alumni Association and as a member and a president of the Lion Athletics Association. He was instrumental in establishing for Athletics the Riverbell Classic for football, Cypress Trophy for softball, and the Pontchartrain Bowl for baseball. In response, he was honored with numerous awards over the years, including the Friendship Oak Award and five Sigma Tau Gamma New Orleans Alumni Chapter Man of the Year awards.
Before retiring, Cameron, a New Orleans native who loved cars and occasionally played golf, enjoyed a successful career characterized by helping others. He served as an administrator at both Southeastern Baptist and Children’s Hospital of New Orleans, as the executive vice president of hospital operations at Methodist Hospital, and as the executive vice president of the Methodist Health System Foundation.
