HAMMOND – Southeastern Louisiana University will celebrate the legacy of the late Civil Rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. with a memorial march and remembrance program Jan. 23 at 6 p.m.
Open to the public and featuring remarks by Burnett King, Sr., a pastor, teacher, evangelist, author, motivational speaker, and track and field coach, the event is sponsored annually by the Kappa Nu Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity and the Office of Multicultural and International Student Affairs.
The march will begin with a candlelight processional at the North Campus Cook Field parking lot (to the right of the University Center and left of the Alumni Center), continue on main campus past the Pennington Student Activity Center or “The Rec,” and end at the big ‘S’ in the Student Union breezeway, weather permitting. In the event of rain, the location will be upstairs in the Student Union Theatre.
Attendees are encouraged to access the distance of the march and, if unable to march the entire distance, can join the program portion of the event after the march.
The program will begin at 6:30 p.m. with student recognition, followed by guest speaker Burnett King Jr., and light refreshments before concluding. King will present his speech, “Dream-Believe-Do-Repeat,” during the memorial program.
A native of McManus, La., and a resident of Baton Rouge, King earned his bachelor of science degree from Grambling State University, his master of business administration from Chadwick University in Birmingham, Ala., and his doctorate in theology from Summit Bible College in Bakersfield, Calif. He is also a member of the Xi Nu Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and the 100 Black Men of Metro Baton Rouge.
