HAMMOND – A lecture, dance concert, opera and fundraiser are the events scheduled during the final act of the 37th season of Fanfare, Southeastern Louisiana University’s annual fall arts festival.
First up is the final History and Political Science Fanfare lecture Oct. 31. Scheduled at 12:30 p.m. in Pottle Auditorium “Hijacking History: A Real Halloween Horror Story” will be presented by History and Political Science Department Head Bill Robison.
The More-or-Less Annual Halloween Lecture returns with a serious message from the Head HIPSter.
“I will examine how ideologues and opportunists on the ‘left’ and ‘right’ hijack history to serve political agendas, how activists and education officials sanitize the past to avoid causing discomfort, how consulting firms profit at the expense of genuine scholarship, and how textbook publishers dumb down history,” Robison said. “Costumes are welcome, as is righteous indignation. And there will be candy.”
Next up Nov. 2 and 3 Southeastern Opera/Musical Theatre Workshop presents a double bill of “Old Maid and the Thief” by Giancarlo Menotti and “Signor Deluso” by Thomas Pasatieri. The shows tell two stories of wild misunderstandings that will leave the audience in delightful surprise. Scheduled at 7:30 p.m. both evenings, the event will take place in Pottle Auditorium.
The group Friends of Sims Library is hosting its 15th annual “Wine with Friends,” a fundraiser for Southeastern’s Linus A. Sims Memorial Library, at 7 p.m., Friday, Nov. 3. Held at the library, the event will feature six wines paired with food samplings, live music, a silent auction that boasts art, books, wine and gift certificates for restaurants, events, and services.
Buddies Bar and Grill will return as caterers for the event.
Tickets are $70 each, and doors open at 6:30 p.m. with the tasting beginning at 7 p.m. Space is limited, so early reservations are requested. All funds raised go directly to the library, thanks to donations from area businesses.
Rounding out the Fanfare fun is a Southeastern Dance Department Performance Project alumni concert featuring Southeastern alumni dancers as choreographers. Titled “This is Who We Are,” the concert is scheduled at 7 p.m. in Columbia Theatre for the Performing Arts in downtown Hammond. Tickets range from $15 – 40.
Fanfare events are free, unless otherwise noted. For more information, contact the Columbia/Fanfare office at 985-549-2999.
