The new Medical and Therapeutic Play Lab has become an essential part of the Department of Health and Human Sciences, offering students hands-on, realistic training in child development, child life, and therapeutic interventions. It bridges classroom learning with real-world application, helping students build confidence and competence in working with children and families.

Faculty have observed marked improvements in student engagement, communication, and critical thinking skills. Through simulation experiences, students learn to lead developmentally appropriate activities, such as facilitating a Teddy Bear Clinic for preschoolers to demystify medical procedures and designing field trip experiences for high school students to explore careers in child life and health sciences.

The lab’s impact extends beyond campus, preparing students for meaningful roles in pediatric healthcare settings. Students have contributed as volunteers at leading hospitals like Ochsner for Children, Manning Family Children’s Hospital, and Our Lady of the Lake. Their preparation has also led to competitive practicum placements and internships, both nationally and internationally, including at institutions such as Mount Sinai, Montefiore, and even Red Cross Memorial Hospital in South Africa.

Overall, the medical and therapeutic play lab has proven to be a powerful tool for advancing student readiness, helping them transition from learners to professionals equipped to make a meaningful impact in the lives of children and families.

Funds for the Medical and Therapeutic Play Lab were received from a Louisiana Board of Regents Grant with matching funds from Southeastern donors.
