Funded by a Board of Regents grant and donations, the College of Nursing and Health Sciences’ “Sim House” is a realistic, fully-furnished home that immerses students from programs such as nursing, child life, social work, counseling, and communication sciences in hands-on training. By simulating in-home care, it equips future healthcare and human services professionals to deliver safe, effective, and compassionate care in real living environments.
Students practice navigating mobility challenges, operating home medical equipment, and identifying safety hazards, while also engaging with digital health tools such as remote monitoring devices, wearable sensors, and telehealth technology from both provider and patient perspectives.
By blending the authenticity of a real home with the controlled safety of a simulation environment, the Sim House bridges the gap between theory and practice. It reflects the growing healthcare trend of delivering services in home-based settings—a shift driven by advances in technology, patient preference, and the need to reduce hospital stays. Graduates who train in the Sim House enter the workforce better prepared to adapt to the complexities of home care, collaborate across professions, and advocate for patient safety and dignity in every setting.
By supporting the Sim House, donors are helping future healthcare professionals learn to care where it matters most—at home.
