Southeastern Louisiana University Laboratory School fifth-grade student Lani Traylor has been selected as the 2026 Louisiana Region 6 Student of the Year and will represent the region in Louisiana’s Student of the Year competition.

Traylor has already been recognized as Student of the Year at the school level, Tangipahoa Parish School System Student of the Year, Parish Zone Level Student of the Year, which consists of all public, private, and parochial schools, and Region 6 Student of the Year. Her advancement to the state level marks the first time in more than 20 years that a student from a Tangipahoa Parish school has reached the state competition, making this achievement a historic milestone for the school, university, and the district.

Southeastern Lab School Director Stephen Labbé said Traylor is one of only eight fifth-grade students in Louisiana selected as a state finalist, placing her among the most accomplished elementary students in the state.

“Known for her strong academic performance, leadership, and community involvement, Lani maintains a 4.0 grade point average and consistently earns high marks on state assessments, reflecting her dedication to academic excellence,” he said.

Beyond the classroom, Traylor is actively involved in numerous school organizations and leadership roles at the Southeastern Lab School. She serves as a volleyball manager and scorekeeper, is a member of the track team, participates in the drama club, pep squad, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and has been selected for the school’s Talented Theatre Program.

Traylor’s talents and commitment extend beyond the school. She has competed nationally in competitive cheerleading with Live Oak Rec, a nationally ranked elite cheer team, earning multiple first-place titles and recognition at regional and national competitions.

In addition to her academic and extracurricular achievements, Traylor demonstrates a strong commitment to service. She volunteers extensively throughout her church and community, assisting with parish events, community festivals, and service projects supporting families and children in the local area.

Educators and mentors consistently describe Lani as a student who exemplifies integrity, compassion, and leadership. Labbé noted that Traylor represents the very best qualities of the school community, highlighting her dedication, humility, and commitment to helping others.

“Lani credits much of her success to the support of her family, teachers, and her faith in Christ,” he said. “In her personal statement, she emphasized the importance of kindness, perseverance, and staying dedicated to one’s goals.”

As she prepares to represent Region 6 at the Louisiana’s Student of the Year state competition, Traylor continues to serve as an inspiration to her peers and a source of pride for Southeastern Laboratory School, the university, and TPSS, Labbé added.

“We wish Lani well as she competes for Louisiana’s Student of the Year,” he said.
