The Best College Experience Might Be the One You Didn’t Expect
At Southeastern Louisiana University, you’ll find the connection, campus culture, and opportunities that make college unforgettable while being part of a community where you’re truly valued.

Your college search may start with imagining a certain kind of experience: big traditions, packed football Saturdays, and the excitement of life on a vibrant university campus. But when you begin looking for the right college in Louisiana, you may realize you want something more personal, too. You want a university where you feel connected, supported, and involved from day one.
“But at Southeastern… I’ve never felt like just a number.”
“I actually was planning to go to [a larger state university] until two weeks before classes started,” said English education major Collin McClure. “But at Southeastern… I’ve never felt like just a number.”
That’s what makes Southeastern different. Small class sizes, meaningful faculty relationships, and hands-on opportunities create a college experience where relationships, opportunity, and support go hand in hand.
“You don’t fall through the cracks,” said political science student Thomas Nealsson. “There aren’t 100 other students packed into a class with you.”
“...the professors were there for me too. They would remember my name.”
At Southeastern, professors know your name. With a student-to-faculty ratio of 17:1, you’ll build meaningful relationships with professors who mentor you, encourage you, and help you grow both academically and personally.
“Not only did I feel automatically welcomed when I came into the university by students, but the professors were there for me too. They would remember my name,” said English education major Eva Delatte.
College is more than a classroom, and Southeastern is without exception.
From tailgates and homecoming celebrations to Gumbo YaYa, Strawberry Jubilee, and events in the Student Union, Southeastern offers a student life experience that feels energetic, welcoming, and easy to be part of.
“There’s always a litany of people to connect with, talk to and do things with here at Southeastern,” Thomas said.
That sense of connection is part of what makes campus life feel approachable and personal from the start.
“Whenever I came to Southeastern, I wasn’t expecting to find it, but whenever I did, I never wanted to leave.”
For many students, that connection quickly starts to feel like home.
“It’s hard to find the home, the family aspect that you’ve craved,” Eva said. “Whenever I came to Southeastern, I wasn’t expecting to find it, but whenever I did, I never wanted to leave.”
At Southeastern, you’re encouraged to get involved early and find your place within the Lion family. Whether that means joining campus organizations, attending student events, taking on leadership roles, or gaining experience through internships and student employment, there are countless ways to connect with the people and experiences that shape your college journey. Along the way, you’ll meet classmates, faculty, and mentors who want to see you succeed.
“It’s a world of opportunity for what I want to do with my life,” Eva said. “I knew exactly where I was going, and Southeastern was able to provide that for me.”
Choosing a university is also about creating flexibility for the future. Whether that means graduate school, starting a career, or pursuing new opportunities after graduation, many students are looking for long-term value and support along the way.
“Southeastern is helping me get there by being a really cost-effective but high-quality choice.”
Southeastern offers the best of both worlds, according to Thomas: the energy of “a close-knit community,” and the experience of a Louisiana university.
“It’s a great place for networking,” Thomas said.
The college experience you imagine for yourself may not look exactly the way you expected. Sometimes, the right fit is the place where you feel supported, connected, and encouraged from the moment you arrive.
For Thomas, the choice is easy.
“I would tell them to pick Southeastern, pick Southeastern first.”
Because at Southeastern, you’re not treated like a number or a backup plan. You’re welcomed, supported, and valued from day one.
Here, you’re our first choice.
