Southeastern student recognized for research

A Southeastern Louisiana University integrative biology student has been recognized for his student research. Aidan Hidalgo of Luling presented his research at the 11th annual LSUS Regional Student Scholars Forum and was named the overall winner for oral research presentations. Hidalgo’s was among 16 undergraduate oral presentations from students at 10 universities with participants representing institutions in several other states.

His 15‑minute presentation titled “BenchScraper and Cluster AY Phages: Similarity, Distinct Features, and Genetic Exchange” highlighted the research project that began in the Honors Virus Hunters course during his freshman year and has continued under the mentorship of Biological Sciences Department Head Justin Anderson, supported by the College of Honors and Excellence and the Department of Biological Sciences.

“Since first taking Virus Hunters, Aidan has continued a largely self-driven research project investigating how bacterial viruses can exchange genetic information,” said Anderson. “This award is a testament to his hard work, motivation, and genuine interest in conducting an undergraduate research experience in the Department of Biological Sciences at Southeastern.”

“This recognition reflects the strength of the research opportunities offered to undergraduates and the impact of early research engagement at Southeastern,” Hidalgo said. “I am very grateful for the training and support I have received at Southeastern. This is just one example of the success of our undergraduate research initiatives.”
