Southeastern’s Center for Environmental Research Expands Understanding of Louisiana’s Fragile Ecosystems
Southeastern’s new Center for Environmental Research conducts independent, multi-disciplinary studies—such as its real-time monitoring of the Lake Maurepas ecosystem—to protect local ecosystems, inform public policy, and train students for environmental careers.

Southeastern Louisiana University is strengthening its role as a leader in environmental science and public-impact research through the work of its newly established Center for Environmental Research, an initiative focused on monitoring, understanding, and protecting Louisiana’s diverse ecosystems.
Approved by the Louisiana Board of Regents in 2025, the center was created to build upon years of ongoing environmental monitoring and scientific research in southeastern Louisiana and other environmentally sensitive areas throughout the state. The Center’s mission is to provide independent, science-based environmental research that informs both the public and decision-makers as Louisiana navigates emerging industries and environmental challenges.
Under the leadership of Director Kyle Piller, the Center for Environmental Research brings together faculty, researchers, and students from multiple disciplines to study biodiversity, wetlands, water quality, ecological health, and chemical impacts across aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. “The center also serves as a hub for outreach and education, providing public access to environmental data and engaging communities in conversations about environmental stewardship and sustainability,” said Piller.
One of the center’s most significant projects is its comprehensive environmental monitoring effort in the Lake Maurepas ecosystem. Located in southeastern Louisiana, Lake Maurepas is one of the state’s ecologically important estuarine systems and has become the focus of increased scientific attention as carbon capture and sequestration projects are proposed in the area.
Through this project, Southeastern serves as the independent environmental monitoring entity. It is gathering baseline environmental data to better understand this under-researched area before any industrial activities take place. Researchers are studying both abiotic factors—such as water quality, carbon dioxide levels, turbidity, and dissolved oxygen—and biotic conditions, including fish populations, wetlands, reptiles, amphibians, and plant life. Additional research efforts focus on biodiversity monitoring using environmental DNA techniques, ecological physiology studies assessing organism health, and chemical analyses designed to identify emerging environmental contaminants. Recently, the Center published its third-year annual report, which reported and assessed changes in all factors over time.
Advanced monitoring technologies coupled with traditional field-based sampling are central to the project’s success. Many monitoring buoys deployed throughout Lake Maurepas collect real-time environmental data, while researchers conduct extensive field sampling and laboratory analyses to better understand how environmental conditions change over time. Data gathered through the project are made publicly accessible through online dashboards, reinforcing the center’s commitment to transparency and public engagement.
Beyond scientific discovery, the center creates valuable opportunities for Southeastern students. Undergraduate and graduate students are actively involved in fieldwork, laboratory research, data analysis, and community outreach, gaining hands-on experience that prepares them for careers in environmental science, conservation, and resource management.
As Louisiana works to balance economic development with environmental concerns, Southeastern’s Center for Environmental Research is positioned to play an increasingly important role in providing credible scientific data, advancing environmental awareness, and helping communities better understand and protect the natural resources that define the region.
