Southeastern receives grant to support adult literacy, learning

Southeastern Louisiana University’s Office of Student Accessibility Services has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation to support adult literacy and increase access to educational resources for students with disabilities.

“We are so grateful to the Dollar General Literacy Foundation for investing in our students and helping us expand access to literacy resources and assistive technology,” said Associate Director of Student Accessibility Services Melanie Mulkey. “Over 3,000 students at Southeastern learn differently, whether it is due to dyslexia, ADHD, autism, or physical disabilities, just to name a few. This grant will strengthen our ability to support diverse learners and promote academic success across campus.”

Funds from the grant will be used to improve assistive technology inventory and integration, establish a lending resource library, and provide literacy success materials that help eliminate barriers to academic achievement, Mulkey said. Although the resources will be housed within the Office of Student Accessibility Services, they will be available to support the entire Southeastern campus community.

For over 30 years, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation has supported literacy and education initiatives nationwide. Since its founding in 1993, the foundation has awarded more than $292 million in grants, helping more than 25 million individuals improve literacy skills, earn educational credentials, and achieve English proficiency.
