Keonta Johnson – President’s Award for Excellence in Staff Service

Some leaders make an impact through a single initiative. Others leave their mark through years of steady service, thoughtful leadership, and an unwavering commitment to the people around them. For Keonta Johnson, service is not simply part of her profession—it is the thread that connects her work at Southeastern with her dedication to the broader community.

Johnson’s commitment to service is defined by strategic leadership and a deep dedication to institutional and community well-being. As Assistant Director of Auxiliary Services, she has built a record of engagement that extends beyond her job responsibilities, advancing Southeastern’s mission while creating opportunities for others to succeed.

“My professional life is rooted in a service mindset, beginning with my educational foundation at Southeastern, having earned a Bachelor of Arts in Social Work (2007) and a Master of Education in School Counseling (2012),” she said. “This period instilled the principles of advocacy, ethical practice, and deep empathy, creating a non-negotiable professional mandate to prioritize the well-being and success of others.”

Assistant Vice President for Operations and Auxiliary Services Connie Davis said Johnson’s influence can be seen across campus through her service on numerous university committees, where her creativity and leadership have helped drive meaningful progress.

“It is simply a joy to work with Keonta because she is an incredible team player who welcomes collaboration from others,” Davis said. “Keonta is someone who will consistently represent the university well and can be placed in any situation and, without a doubt, she will handle it with grace and professionalism while delivering high quality customer service.”

Johnson’s impact extends well beyond her office. She works closely with community leaders, alumni, and university supporters and is widely respected for her professionalism and collaborative spirit.

Among her most significant contributions are her roles in strategic governance and talent acquisition. She has chaired four director-level search committees for key auxiliary units, including University Housing, the Student Union, and Campus Card Operations. She also contributes to the AI Task Force and serves on the University Belonging, Presidential Investiture, and Centennial committees, helping shape Southeastern’s future.

Equally important is her commitment to student success. Johnson serves as a faculty advisor to student organizations and currently serves as secretary for the Women’s Basketball P.R.I.D.E. program.

“My commitment to excellence is reflected in high-impact community outreach,” Johnson said. “I serve in leadership roles as the assistant director of site and facilities for Special Olympics Louisiana, and I serve as a former board member for the Tangi Elite 7 on 7 program.”

Johnson also mentors participants through the Capital Re-entry Coalition and volunteers with the Dixon Correctional Institute Prison Ministry. Together, her leadership, mentorship, and community engagement reflect a sustained commitment to serving others and strengthening the communities Southeastern calls home.
