Dr. Barnes is interested in the interaction of synthetic organic molecules with enzymes. His current research investigates new potential enzyme inhibitors for the treatment of Malaria and the elucidation of the impacts of enzyme mutations in the development of juvenile cancers. His past research has dealt with the characterization of different methods for detoxifying ricin, a potent toxin found in the castor bean, as well as mechanisms to genetically modify castor to inhibit ricin production.
