Honors Programs



The History and Political Science Department offers an Honors Diploma in History, Political Science and Social Studies Education. For academic requirements and how to apply go to the Honors Program website.

 

Honors Diploma in History

For the Honors Diploma in History (Honors Core Curriculum Path One), majors
must complete the following requirements:
English 121H..3 hours
English 122H..3 hours
History 101H..3 hours
History 102H..3 hours
English 291H, English 292H, Economics 201H,

GBIO 151H, Math 161H, Honors 191, Honors 311,

Honors 312, Honors 313, or Honors 314 (1)...........3 hours
History 201H..3 hours
History 202H..3 hours
History 400-level Honors option courses..6 hours
History 300 (senior thesis) (2)...1 hour
Total 28 hours (3)

1. Any one of these courses can be substituted for similar curriculum requirements
with the approval of the Department Head.
2. The domain in which the student will complete the thesis project will be
determined during the student’s enrollment in History 497. History majors must
participate in the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences’undergraduate researchprogram, a service learning project, an internship, or the Study Abroad program.
3. Honors Core Curriculum Path One for the Honors Diploma in a Discipline
(detailed above for History) and Honors Core Curriculum Path Two for the Honors
Diploma in the University Honors Program (described under Honors Program in this
catalog) will add no hours to the total degree hours required.
History majors following Honors Core Curriculum Path Three for the Honors
Diploma in a Discipline and the University Honors Program must complete a total of 40
hours in Honors courses, included the courses listed above and an additional 12 hours in
History 400-level Honors Option courses, Honors 311, Honors 312, Honors 313, and/or
Honors 314. This will add no hours to the total degree hours required.

 

Honors Diploma in Political Science

 

For the Honors Diploma in History (Honors Core Curriculum Path One), majors must
complete the following requirements:
English 121H..3 hours
English 122H..3 hours
History 101H..3 hours
History 102H..3 hours
English 291H, English 292H, Economics 201H,

GBIO 151H, Math 161H, Honors 191, Honors 311,

Honors 312, Honors 313, or Honors 314 (1).........3 hours
History 201H or Political Science 201 Honors Option..3 hours
History 202H or Political Science 202 Honors Option3 hours
Political Science 400-level Honors option courses..6 hours
Honors 300 (senior thesis) (2)1 hour

12 hours in Political Science 400-level Honors Option courses, Honors 311, Honors 312,
Honors 313, and/or Honors 314. This will add no hours to the total degree hours
required.

Honors Diploma in Social Studies Education

 

For the Honors Diploma in Social Studies Education (Honors Core Curriculum Path
One), majors must complete the following requirements:

English 122H..3 hours
History 101H..3 hours
History 102H..3 hours
English 291H, English 292H, Economics 201H,

GBIO 151H, Math 161H, Honors 191, Honors 311,

majors must participate in the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences' undergraduate research program, a service learning project, an internship, or the Study Abroad program.
3. Honors Core Curriculum Path One for the Honors Diploma in a Discipline
(detailed above for Social Studies Education) and Honors Core Curriculum Path Two for
the Honors Diploma in the University Honors Program (described under Honors Program
in this catalog) will add 6 hours of Foreign Language to the total degree hours required.
Social Studies Education majors following Honors Core Curriculum Path Three for
the Honors Diploma in a Discipline and the University Honors Program must complete a
total of 40 hours in Honors courses, included the courses listed above and an additional
12 hours in Geography, History, Political Science, or Sociology 400-level Honors Option
courses, and/or Honors 311, Honors 312, Honors 313, and/or Honors 314. This will add
6 hours of Foreign Language to the total degree hours required.
Social Studies Education majors following Honors Core Curriculum Path Four for the
Honors Diploma in Liberal Studies may obtain the Honors Diploma in Liberal Studies
and in a Discipline by completing a total of 43 hours in Honors courses and 12 hours in a
single Foreign Language, including the courses listed above and an additional 15 hours of Honors courses and 6 hours of Foreign Language. This must include English 291H,
English 292H, Honors 311, Honors 312, Honors 313, Honors 314, Foreign Language
201, and Foreign Language 202. This will add 12 hours of Honors courses to the total
degree hours required.
