Powershift 2011

Powershift is an environmental awareness conference held every two years in Washington D.C. and took place this year from April 15th to April 18th as 10,000 students from across the U.S. attended. Students Bonnie May, Hope Johnson, Allegra Weldon and Johnathan Reynolds of ourenvironmental and social justice awareness group Reconnect attended and participated in several workshops dedicated to the education of an environmentally friendly and sustainable lifestyle. Reconnect fortunately was able to attend and be involved in the Real Food Challenge workshop which is a current project Reconnect is working with in order to put local, sustainably produced food in the Caymen Cafeteria. Among the keynote speakers at the conference this year included Al Gore and Van Jones. On the last day of the conference, thousands of Powershifters came together and marched through downtown Washington D.C. to Capitol Hill and the Camber of Commerce. Team leaders were able to speak to the senators and representatives of their respected state about the Powershift movement and environmental issues that it wishes to heal.
