Everybody's Child: A Service-Learning Grant

Grant Overview

The purpose of this service-learning grant funded by the University of Louisiana System and Learn and Serve America: Higher Education Affiliation is to focus on teacher preparation in times of crisis and recovery, in an effort to improve schools by better preparing teachers to respond to the needs of children and families in local communities.

The grant is aimed at enhancing teacher knowledge, skills, and dispositions in supporting learners during such times as those experienced by residents of the Gulf Coast following Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

Goals

  • To develop a curricular framework that incorporates service-learning pedagogy for enhancing teacher preparedness in times of catastrophic events and ongoing emergency situations

  • To provide professional development that embraces literacy-based activities designed to support families and children's academic development as well as social and emotional needs

  • To establish Louisiana as the Gulf Coast Site for the International Center for Everybody's Child at Hofstra University

Focus on Service-Learning

Using the pedagogy of service-learning, undergraduates and graduates learn about the course content while providing service to their communities. Critical to service-learning and quality teaching, teacher candidates and teachers reflect on their service experiences and connect those to the literacy-based course content. This literacy-based curricular framework is designed to enhance the classroom learning environment and support families and children.
