The Southeastern Louisiana Writing Project is a National Writing Project site and is part of a national network of outstanding teachers. Our motto is “teachers teaching teachers.”
The Southeastern Louisiana Writing Project was founded in 1992 and is about teachers who write and writers who teach. SLWP operates on the belief that teachers who write are better teachers of writing. We create opportunities for experienced teachers to share what works in their classrooms in pursuit of solid practices and successful activities, not gimmicks or fads.
SLWP offers opportunities for personal growth through Summer Institutes and Inservice programs. Each year, we sponsor a writing contest for outstanding essays, SLWP Writes! We also facilitate a summer camp of Young Writers. We are the home of the nationally acclaimed “New Orleans Writing Marathon.”
There are five other Writing Project sites in the state of Louisiana: Greater New Orleans WP at University of New Orleans, Louisiana State University WP in Baton Rouge, McNeese Writing Project, Northwestern State University WP in Natchitoches, and the National WP of Acadiana at University of Lafayette. The state network also sponsors an annual writing contest for outstanding essays.
The National Writing Project is a professional development network dedicated to improving student writing and learning by improving the teaching of writing in our nation’s schools. Begun in 1973 at the University of California, Berkeley, the NWP is a steadily growing network of more than200 sites in 50 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. NWP sites use a teacher-teaching-teachers model that draws on the knowledge, expertise, and leadership of successful classroom teachers to annually serve more than 100,000 teachers, grades K-16, in all disciplines.
