ARO: Alternate Responsible Officer. Acts as an advisor and maintains SEVIS record of J-1
exchange visitors.DHS: Department of Homeland Security. Has jurisdiction over immigration services as
well as other functions.DS-2019: Issued by foreign student advisor for students who wish to apply for the J-1
exchange student/scholar visa.DSO: Designated School Official. Acts as an advisor and maintains SEVIS record of F-1
students.I-20: Issued by foreign student advisor for students who wish to apply for the F-1 visa.

are admitted to the U.S., who are adjusting status while in the U.S., or

their stay, among other things. NOTE: Changes to the process of receiving
