2011 Distinguished Alumnus: Luz Maria Lopez

Luz Maria Lopez is a Honduran-born painter who came to the United States in 1966 to study and became a bilingual secretary. After working and raising a family, she returned to school and received her bachelor of arts degree from Southeastern in 1995. Since then, her work was selected for display in "Trophies of Honor," a project hosted by the Griffith University at Queensland, Australia and Mississippi State University.

The project's mission was to chronicle and preserve native culture and art. She has exhibited her work nationally in numerous group and solo shows. Venues include the Meadows Museum at Centenary College, Museum of Latin American Art in California, Mobile Museum of Art, and the Hunter Museum of American Art in Tennessee. A collection of her work also hangs in the lobby of Southeastern's D Vickers classroom building.
