2005 Distinguished Alumnus: Myles Seghers

 

Dr. Myles Seghers received his degrees from Southeastern a B.A. in Social Studies Education in 1970 and his M. Ed. In Educational Administration in 1977.

Following graduation he worked for eight years as an assistant basketball and baseball coach while teaching social studies at Archbishop Rummel High School.

Shortly after receiving his Education Administration degree he was named the principal overseeing 1350 students and a staff of 70 and continued in the position until 1989.  He then joined the Diocese of New Orleans as Assistant Superintendent for Financial Development supervising the personnel office for teachers and administrators. In 1992 he became the Associate Superintendent for elementary schools providing direct supervision of eighteen elementary schools and directing the academic program for the eighty elementary schools by coordinating the School Improvement Program. He also worked with the Southern Association for Colleges and Schools (SACS) to facilitate their accreditation in archdiocesan elementary schools.

In 1995, he was named the Executive Assistant to the Superintendent and Associate Superintendent for the Office of Catholic Schools. This office serves 104 schools, 50,000 students and 2,500 teachers statewide.

In 1998, he joined Our Lady of Holy Cross College as the Director of Student teaching and taught graduate and undergraduate classes. He later also became coordinator for the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) Process and subsequently also accepted the position of Director of Undergraduate Education and Certification. In 2004, Dr. Seghers became the acting Dean of Humanities, Education, and Counseling at Our Lady of Holy Cross College.

Dr. Seghers has published numerous papers on subjects regarding student teaching, supervisory style, alternative assessments, students at risk, and creating powerful learning. His articles have appeared in the Louisiana Middle School Journal and the NASSP Bulletin, Homeschooling News and Momentum. It is obvious Dr. Seghers has a passion for his chosen professional field and has distinguished himself and Southeastern in the process.
