Revised on February 12, 2001 with the approval of the NCATE Steering Committee, the Council for Teacher Education, and the Dean with input from the faculty within the three departments within the college.

Vision 2006

 

The College of Education is a growing and vital part of the state and national network of colleges which prepare teachers and other human services professionals. Its programs are not only accredited, but they also meet the ever advancing standards set by both discipline-specific and profession-wide national standards.

 

Qualified candidates are actively recruited to attract a diverse, preparedstudent body into College of Education programs. Members of the community we serve are actively involved in the development of all programs. Students and graduates are sought by employers and graduate schools regionally and nationally. College of Education programs are recognized and supported by University, state and national organizations, and agencies.

 

Mission Statement

 

The mission of the College of Education at Southeastern is to maximize the development of our students for leadership roles in education and human service professions, and society in general. College of Education programs provide quality instruction that incorporates multiple learning experiences, contribute to research and other scholarly activity, and infuses technology. To fulfill this mission faculty model the joy of lifelong learning, the celebration of diversity, and the provision of caring service. We strive to empower individuals to change their world in large and small, but ever-significant ways.

Goals


Goal 1: To create and maintain a caring environment within the College.

 

Objective 1: Faculty will maintain high student ratings of advisement and counseling through AY 2006.

 

Objective 2: SOT ratings on items related to a caring environment will be maintained through AY 2006.

 

Objective 3: Faculty and staff within the College will report higher ratings on communication both internally and externally by AY 2006.

 

Objective 4: Students within the College will report higher ratings on communication both internally and externally by AY 2006.

 

Objective 5: Scholarships and other student assistance for College students will increase by 25% by AY 2006.

 

Objective 6: By the end of AY 1999 a more inclusive title for the College of Education will have been recommended by the faculty to the Dean's Administrative Council and from the Dean's Administrative Council to the University.

 

Goal 2: To value and demonstrate an understanding of diverse thinking, beliefs, and curriculum.

 

Objective 1: At least 15% of the faculty and staff in the College will represent minority or otherwise traditionally under-represented groups by AY 2006.

 

Objective 2: At least 25% of the students in the College will represent minority or otherwise traditionally under-represented groups by AY 2006.

 

Objective 3: Professional preparation programs will include at least one course focused on diversity issues.

 

Objective 4: Faculty within the College will include diversity related objectives, activities, and discussion topics in all appropriate course content and syllabi.

 

Objective 5: Field experiences for all undergraduate and graduate students will include experiences in rural as well as urban settings which have a diverse constituency.

 

Goal 3: To respect and support diverse research and scholarly activities.

 

Objective 1: The number of research projects and programs supported by external funding will increase by 100% by AY 2006.

 

Objective 2: The number of service projects and programs supported by external funding will increase by 100% by AY 2006.

 

Objective 3: Faculty within the College will recognize and support the full range of professional activities listed in the SLU Faculty Handbook with respect to promotion and tenure decisions.

 

Objective 4: Department heads within the College will recognize and support the full range of professional activities listed in the SLU Faculty Handbook related to annual evaluations.

 

Objective 5: The Center for Educational Services and Research (CEDSAR) will actively promote and support a program of undergraduate research by AY 2000.

 

Objective 6: The Center for Educational Services and Research (CEDSAR) will actively promote and support a program of graduate student research by AY 2002.

 

Goal 4: To provide the highest quality curriculum and instruction.

 

Objective 1: By AY 2006, all professional preparation programs will be aligned with best practice research and the standards of appropriate national boards, commissions, and accreditation agencies.

 

Objective 2: All College curricula will be aligned with clinical and field experiences which are supported by key practicing professionals by AY 2001.

 

Objective 3: All faculty and students in the college will have integrated appropriate technologies into classroom and field experiences by AY 2001.

 

Objective 4: All College professional preparation programs will have entered into professional partnership agreements with key school districts, agencies, or institutions by AY 2006.

 

Objective 5: By the end of AY 2000, the College will have adopted college-wide and/or program-specific standards for ethical and professional conduct.

 

Goal 5: To respect and reward continuous growth in teaching and learning.

 

Objective 1: The Dean's Administrative Council (DAC) will develop a comprehensive plan for determining faculty load within university and college guidelines by the end of AY 1999.

 

Objective 2: By the end of AY 2000, the college will have adopted standards for the evaluation of instruction which are valid, reliable, and rely on multiple sources of data.

 

Objective 3: By the end of AY 2001, merit, promotion and tenure decisions will be tied directly to annual evaluations.

 

Objective 4: By the year 2006 at least 20% of the faculty in the College will be National Board Certified.

 

Goal 6: To affirm and reward service as an integral part of faculty responsibilities.

Objective 1: By AY 2002, service, as a faculty responsibility, will be better defined and more fully recognized as a part of the merit, promotion and tenure evaluation processes.

 

Objective 2: Each unit/program in the college will have at least one service learning/project program in operation by AY 2006.

 

Objective 3: Each unit/program, by AY 2006, will require at least one substantial service learning activity for each student prior to graduation.

 

Goal 7: To provide exemplary facilities for teaching/service to the community.

 

Objective 1: Physical space for units within the College will have been increased by 50% by AY 2006.

 

Objective 2: Appropriate hardware and software applications will have been increased by at least 50% by AT 2006.

 

Objective 3: All College programs, in order to enhance facilities and provide more space, will have developed at least one professional partnership with appropriate schools, agencies, and institutions by AY 2001.

 

Objective 3: All facilities used by College programs will be fully accessible to all constituency groups by AY 2006.

 

Objective 4: The number of faculty offices will have been increased by 50% by AY 2006.

 

Objective 5: Clinical and/or laboratory facilities will have increased capacity for service to faculty and students by at least 50% by AY 2006.

 

Goal 8: To implement state-of-the-art technology.

 

Objective 1: By the end of AY 1999, the College will have developed a strategic plan for technology implementation.

 

Objective 2: By the end of AY 2000, sufficient external funding to provide needed hardware, software, and personnel support for state-of-the-art technology implementation will have been secured.

 

Objective 3: By the end of AY 2001, faculty, staff, and students will implement paperless instruction and assessment in coursework.

 

Objective 4: By the end of AY 2001, 80% of faculty and students will use technology applications to complete at least 51% of advising, communications, and administrative tasks.

 

Objective 5: By the end of AY 2000, faculty will be offering at least 10% of the curriculum via compressed video, Internet, and other distance learning media.

 

Objective 6: By the end of AY 2000, faculty will have incorporated multimedia instruction and assignments in 25% of the curriculum.

 

Goal 9: To develop and implement a program for student and faculty development.

 

Objective 1: CEDSAR will develop a strategic plan for faculty development by the end of AY 2000.

 

Objective 2: CEDSAR will annually identify faculty development needs, prioritize needs, and recommend means for training during the next academic year.

 

Objective 3: CEDSAR will provide at least two professional development activities for faculty and staff annually.

 

Objective 4: The College will maintain and expand the Teacher Development Program by the end of AY 1998-99.

 

Objective 5: The College will maintain and expand the Teacher Mentor Program by the end of AY 1998-99.

 

Objective 6: The College will maintain and expand the Teacher Scholars Program by the end of AY 1998-99.

 

Goal 10: To facilitate collaboration and inter-connectedness between faculty and students within and across disciplines.

 

Objective 1: Faculty will develop at least four new interdisciplinary projects or programs by AY 2002.

 

Objective 2: Faculty and students will develop at least one forum for discussion of relevant current issues involving three or more disciplines from within or outside of the College.

 

Objective 3: Service learning activities involving students from a variety of programs will increase by 100% by AY 2006.

 

Objective 4: At least 50% of the students and the faculty in the College will indicate high or very high satisfaction with opportunities for collaboration among and between students and faculty from their own and other departments by the end of AY 2000.

 

Goal 11: To expand partnerships between the College and the external community.

 

Objective 1: The number of partnerships between the college and external agencies, institutions, schools, and businesses will have doubled by AY 2001.

 

Objective 2: Extramural funding will be developed to support at least one new partnership each year from AY 1999 through AY 2006.

 

Objective 3: The College will have developed at least two fully functioning "professional development school" relationships with surrounding parish districts by AY 2002.

 

Goal 12: To diversify the funding base for the College.

 

Objective 1: By the end of AY 1998, each department/unit will have identified ten priority areas appropriate for external funding.

 

Objective 2: By the end of AY 1998, each department/unit will have identified at least one team of faculty, staff, and students which will commit to seek funding for those priorities.

 

Objective 3: By the end of AY 1999, each team will have submitted at least three fundable proposals based on the identified priority areas.

 

Objective 4: By the end of AY 1999, the College will have received at least $500,000 in grants from sources external to Louisiana.

 

Objective 5: By the end of the academic year 2006 the College will have received at least $3,000,000 in grants from sources external to Louisiana.
