Department Publications
The Department of English sponsors both professional and student publications. We
host a literary press, Louisiana Literature Press; the professional scholarly journal,
Nineteenth Century Studies; the professional creative writing journal, Louisiana Literature; the student expository writing journal, The Pick, and the student creative writing journal, the Manchac Review; and the professional digital humanities archives, The Book of Margery Kempe and The Early Ruskin Manuscripts.
The student-run journals provide publication opportunities for student writers in
all departments, campus-wide. All department publications, student and professional,
also offer work opportunities for students.
Student Journals
The Pick
The Pick is Southeastern’s journal of student-authored expository writing, representing all
disciplines in the university’s curriculum. At the recommendation of faculty, The Pick reviews the pick of submissions initially composed to fulfill graduate or undergraduate
class assignments in any department. Edited by Lauren Lambert.
The Manchac Review
The Manchac Review is Southeastern’s creative journal, published in print and online. Manchac Review Online is an interactive experience including fiction, poetry, drama, art, music/lyrics,
and video shorts. Edited by Samantha Reine.
Professional Journals and the Press
Louisiana Literature and Louisiana Literature Press
Since 1984, Louisiana Literature has featured some of the finest writing published in America. The journal and the
press strive to spotlight local talent alongside nationally recognized authors. Edited
and directed by Dr. Jack Bedell.
Nineteenth Century Studies
Nineteenth Century Studies is an interdisciplinary journal published annually by the Nineteenth Century Studies
Association along with (starting in 2020) Pennsylvania State University Press. The
journal publishes studies of interest to scholars of the nineteenth century in all
humanistic fields. Edited by Dr. David Hanson.
Digital Humanities Projects
Book of Margery Kempe
The Book of Margery Kempe has become a major text in medieval studies, famed for its first-person account of
a lay woman’s quest for spiritual authority and mystic revelation in a period when
some in England were imprisoned, and in a few cases burned, for heresy. This project
offers a digital facsimile of the Book alongside a transcription that solves many of the problems when print is used to
represent medieval manuscripts. Edited by Dr. Joel Fredell.
The Early Ruskin Manuscripts
The Early Ruskin Manuscripts, 1826-1842 is an archive of the youthful writing of the British art and social critic, John
Ruskin (1819-1900). As an archive of an early Victorian education, including literature,
art, religion, geology, mathematics, and other fields, ERM serves as a resource for scholars interested in Ruskin in particular, and in childhood,
education, and Victorian culture in general. Edited by Dr. David Hanson.
