Sheila Matheny is currently one of the coaches in the RN-BSN program at Southeastern Louisiana University School of Nursing. She earned her Bachelor of Science in 1980 from Louisiana State University Medical Center. She received her Master of Science in Nursing Education from Southeastern Louisiana University in 2010.
She began her nursing career at Earl K. Long Hospital in 1980 in Labor and Delivery, and then completed 27 years at Woman’s Hospital primarily in Labor and Delivery. After 30 years of practice in the hospital, she joined Southeastern Louisiana University School of Nursing in 2010 as a nursing instructor teaching obstetrical and neonatal nursing for 12 years. Following a very brief retirement, she returned to SLU in 2023 to become affiliated with the RN-BSN program in the SLU School of Nursing as a Faculty Coach.

Area of Expertise

Mrs. Matheny’s main area of nursing practice includes labor and delivery, but she has also gained experience over the years in the areas of lactation and employee health. As a nursing instructor, she has taught students in the labor and delivery, nursery, and postpartum sections of the hospital. While an instructor, she has served as the Academic Assessment Coordinator for the SLU School of Nursing; leader of the Real World Ready Initiative for the School of Nursing as part of SLU’s accreditation process; a member and former Chapter Counselor for the Rho Zeta Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society; a member of Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, American Nurses Association, and Louisiana State Nurses Association; and course coordinator for one of the courses taught in the OB curriculum.
