Individual Fanfare, Columbia tickets go on sale Sept. 6
Tickets for the 21st season of Fanfare and for the 2006-07 season of the Columbia Theatre for the Performing Arts will go on sale Sept. 6.
     Patrons can purchase tickets in person at the Columbia box office, located in the lobby of the historic downtown Hammond theater at 220 E. Thomas St., or online at www.columbiatheatre.org. The box office will be open from noon-5 p.m., weekdays, and until one hour before performance time for events at the Columbia Theatre.
     "We are very excited about this year's season, especially Fanfare's 'Louisiana Roots' series, which honors Louisiana artists and topics," said Donna Gay Anderson, director of Fanfare/Columbia.
     The Louisiana Roots series includes lectures by Times-Picayune columnist Chris Rose, Rising Tide author John Barry, and Rice University's John Boles; concerts by legendary entertainers Ronnie Kole and Irma Thomas, and the Last Straws jazz ensemble; readings by Louisiana writers Bev Marshall, Alison Pelegrin, and Tim Gautreaux; New Orleanian M.I. Scoggin's tribute to the great French vocalist Edith Piaf; and Roberts Batson's "post-Katrina" version of his one man show, Amazing Place, This New Orleans.
     While many Fanfare events are free, tickets for 13 events will be sold at the box office and on the Fanfare/Columbia Web site. They are:

     Tickets for the Southeastern Theatre's Oct. 4-7 production of Blythe Spirit at Vonnie Borden Theatre will be available at the Southeastern Theatre's box office in the lobby of D Vickers Hall. Tickets are $10, general admission; and $6, senior citizens, Southeastern faculty, staff and alumni. Southeastern students are admitted free with their university I.D. The D Vickers Hall box office, 985-549-2115, will open weekdays beginning Sept. 27 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. The box office will also open at 6 p.m. on performance nights.
     Since The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial is also part of the Columbia's 2006-2007 season, ticket availability may be limited. Anderson said more than 407 Columbia season tickets where sold during the Aug. 10-31 campaign.
     "Our record season ticket sales indicate that our patrons are as excited as we are about this year's season," Anderson said. "And it indicates, too, that the remaining seats are going to go quickly, so we encourage everyone to purchase tickets early."
     Sept. 6 also marks the date that patrons can begin purchasing tickets for individual Columbia season events. In addition to The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial, those events and prices are:

Southeastern to host Tangi Night Sept. 18
Tangipahoa Parish high school students and their parents can get an informal introduction to college as well as valuable information about scholarships, financial aid, and admission requirements at Tangi Night on Monday, September 18.
     Tangi Night will be held from 6-8 p.m. at Southeastern's Pennington Student Activity Center, located at the intersection of University Avenue and North General Pershing.
     "Tangi Night is the event for Tangipahoa high school students and their families to learn more about selecting colleges and career options," said Anthony Ranatza, coordinator of Orientation and Special Events.
     Students and their parents will be able to browse exhibits offering information on academic and career options, university admissions requirements, the state TOPS scholarship program, as well as other scholarship and financial aid opportunities.
     Tangi Night will host college representatives from Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama universities, both public and private, who will be on hand to inform the students about their respective universities. Banks and lenders will also be available to offer information on financial aid options.

Sept. 15 is December graduation application deadline
Sept. 15 is the final day that Southeastern students can apply to graduate in December 2006.
     The graduation application and payment deadlines will be strictly enforced, university officials said.
     Candidates for associate, bachelor's, and master's degrees can apply for graduation by logging into their LEOnet campus accounts and choosing the "Graduation Information-Apply for Graduation" option. Instructions are available on the "Current Student" link at www.selu.edu or by calling Southeastern's Office of Records and Registration at 985-549-2066.
     The $35 application fee should be paid directly to the Controller's Office, located on North Campus in the Financial Aid Building.

Outside/dual employment
Outside Employment forms for the July 1, 2006 through June 30, 2007 reporting period may now be submitted. Outside employment performed any time during the reporting period must be approved.
     The University of Louisiana System requires that all full-time Southeastern employees, including those who may become temporary full-time employees, annually disclose whether or not they participate in any outside employment activities. The policy recognizes employees' right to engage in outside employment, as long as it is within the proper parameters as established by Louisiana law. Employees who are involved with contracts or agreements between Southeastern and an outside employer must submit a list of all such employment.
     The online form and instructions for completing the form are available at http://www.selu.edu/Administration/Depts/HumanResources/hrooutform.doc. Please copy the form to one page.
     Employees who have completed forms since July 1, 2006, including as part of their employment packet, are not required to complete an additional form, unless they have entered into new outside employment since completing the original form. Employees who have not completed a form since July 1, 2006 are requested to do so now.
     An annual information report listing all outside employment that has been approved and is currently in force under this policy is kept on file at Southeastern.

     Thursday, Sept. 7, 12:30-1:30 p.m.: Science & Religion Brown Bag. Dr. Matt Rossano of the Department of Psychology will open the series with "Supernaturalizing Social Life: Religion and Evolution of Human Cooperation." Bring your lunch and a friend, drinks and cookies will be provided.
     Friday, Sept. 8, 9-10:45 p.m.: Powerpoint. The workshop is designed to introduce the functionality and assist faculty in developing lessons in Powerpoint to assist in easier presentation of information to their students.
     Monday, Sept. 11, 9-10:45 a.m.: Blackboard Introduction Workshop The workshop will cover Blackboard navigation, setting course availability, posting the course syllabus, posting announcements, using e-mail, managing the gradebook and posting grades.
     Call for Proposals -- Teaching Enhancement Grant: The Center for Faculty Excellence announces the call for proposals for Teaching Enhancement Grants for the current fiscal year. The grants are designed to enhance classroom teaching in the areas of professional development in teaching, course enhancement, and curriculum development or revision. Proposals are due by Sept. 22. Child Welfare grant recipientsChild welfare stipend recipients
Seven senior social work students have been awarded $5,000 stipends through a special program funded by a Louisiana Office of Community Services (OCS) Title IV-E grant. The program is designed to prepare professional practitioners in the field of child welfare. Each year, participants are selected based on scholarship, leadership and commitment to work with at-risk families and children. They have committed to take three child welfare courses, serve an internship in local child welfare offices and work in the field for a year following graduation. The grant also funds the students' participation in social work and child welfare conferences. This week in athletics
The Southeastern football team will play its second Division I-A opponent in as many weeks, facing Southern Miss on Saturday at 6 p.m. in Hattiesburg, Miss., during this week in Southeastern Athletics.
     The Lions (0-1) will attempt to shake off their 30-15 loss at New Mexico State last Thursday, when Southeastern forced four Aggie turnovers. Southern Miss (0-1) opened the season with a 34-7 loss at Florida. Saturday's game will be broadcast live in the Hammond area on KAJUN 107.1 FM.
     The Southeastern women's soccer team (3-1) will return home after a successful weekend trip to Alabama, in which it defeated South Alabama and Troy. The Lady Lions will host a pair of non-conference opponents from the Sun Belt Conference over the weekend. Arkansas-Little Rock will be in town on Friday for a 4:30 p.m. match. In-state foe Louisiana-Lafayette will head to Hammond on Sunday for a 2 p.m. match.
     The Southeastern volleyball team (2-5) is scheduled to play four matches this week. On Tuesday, the Lions host Grambling at 6:30 p.m. in the University Center. Admission is free. Southeastern will then hit the road for the third consecutive weekend to compete in the Jaguar Classic in Mobile, Ala. On Friday, the Lady Lions face host South Alabama at 7 p.m. Auburn (11 a.m.) and Samford (4 p.m.) await Southeastern on Saturday.
     The Southeastern cross country team will compete in a pair of meets this weekend. On Tuesday the team will be in Lake Charles to compete in the McNeese State Relay, before heading to Southern Miss to compete in the USM Eagle Invite on Friday. The women's team, led by individual meet champion Mandy Wallace, opened the season with a win at the Tulane Invitational last week.
     The defending Southland Conference champion men's tennis team will open its fall schedule this week. The Lions will be in Athens, Ga., to compete in the Southern Intercollegiate, which begins Friday and runs through Monday.

Andrea Bode and Stephen Soutullo Prairieville resident receives Soutullo Scholarship
Stephen Soutullo, right, dean of Enrollment Management, presents the Joseph and Gloria Soutullo Memorial Scholarship to Andrea Bode of Prairieville, a senior honors student majoring in English. The $1,000 scholarship honors Soutullo's parents, who were longtime Gretna residents. It is awarded annually to the university's Orientation Leader of the Year.

The Aug. 28 By-Lion article about Zach Teitler's appointment as a Project NExT fellow failed to mention that he is the fifth, not fourth, Southeastern mathematics faculty member to receive this prestigious honor. Professional activities
Dr. Jenny Hollander
(Psychology) presented "How Do We Compare?" at the Louisiana Substance Abuse Counselor and Trainee Conference in Baton Rouge in July. Her presentation examined original research related to Louisiana substance abuse counselors' perceptions of ethical dilemmas compared to a national study of substance abuse counselors' perceptions. Dr. Hollander was also elected as the District Two Representative for the Louisiana Substance Abuse Counselor and Trainee Association.
     An e-book edited by Frederick L. Dembowski (Educational Leadership & Technology), Educational Administration: The Roles of Leadership and Management, has been published in NCPEA CONNEXIONS, National Council of Professors of Educational Administration, Huntsville, Texas.
     Ellen D. Bush (General Studies) recently received the prestigious designation of Master Career Counselor (MCC) awarded by the National Career Development Association. Recipients of the MCC designation must possess the additional credential of National Certified Counselor or state Licensed Professional Counselor, demonstrate competencies in career counseling and development, and document career-related experience in areas such as teaching, training, and program and material development.
     Judith Fai-Podlipnik (History) served as a lecturer the Florida State University's Institute for Holocaust Educators in June 2006. Her paper was on the Holocaust in Hungary. She was also appointed as program coordinator for the European Section of the Southwest Social Sciences Association's annual conference.
     Bev Marshall (English) gave two presentations as featured speaker at the Arkansas Writers Conference in Little Rock, Ark.
