Golf: The Musical

HAMMOND – Southeastern Louisiana University’s Columbia Theatre for the Performing Arts is swinging into spring with “Golf: The Musical,” a new revue celebrating the fun, frustration, elation and humor of the world’s most popular sport.

Described by Golf Magazine as “a charming -- and often biting -- ode to the grand old game,” “Golf: The Musical” will be staged on Saturday, April 8, at 7:30 p.m. at the downtown Hammond theater.

Tickets for the approximately 90-minute show, are $30, Orchestra 1 and Loge; $23, Orchestra 2 and Balcony 1; $18, Orchestra 3; and $15, Balcony 2. Tickets are on sale at the theater lobby box office from noon-5 p.m., weekdays, (985) 543-4371.

"A good walk spoiled," is how Mark Twain described the game of golf. “Golf: The Musical” reveals the world of golf, exasperating for some, exciting for others, in songs and comic sketches.

“Although they complain about it, golfers seem more dedicated to their sport than can seem possible,” says golfer Michael Roberts, who wrote the music and lyrics. “We love golf.  We are serious about golf. But golf doesn’t always seem to love us back. We can get angry at that reality, but we can also laugh at it.”

Roberts points out that golf has grown in the past decade as a leading leisure pastime and professional sport enjoyed by 35 million Americans and hundreds of millions of pro and amateur players worldwide. Its popularity, he said, can be seen in the creation of the Golf Channel on television, a plethora of magazines promoting the sport, pro shops and driving ranges cropping up in neighborhoods and shopping malls across the country, and more youngsters taking a swing at the ball than ever before.

Golf Magazine said that Roberts’ two-hour revue is “a cavalcade of gags, puns and ditties, in the form of 18 musical vignettes” with a likable cast -- a foursome, of course. “Golf: The Musical is uproarious!” said the magazine. “Terrific slapstick, sharp observations and a uniformly terrific cast make it funny and fun for the whole foursome.” The New York Times call the show, "A hilarious revue that you’ll be savoring long afterward. The cast plays the crowd and the material beautifully. Shameless…it feels great! Gotta love GOLF: The Musical!"
