SBDC sponsors May seminars on taxes, 'business killers,' harassment claims

      HAMMOND – Southeastern Louisiana University’s Small Business Development Center will host seminars and classes in May focusing on employment taxes, “business killers,” and harassment and abuse claims.

      “Employment Taxes” (May 3) and “Business Killers” (May 9) are scheduled for the Southeastern St. Tammany Center, located on the third floor of the St. Tammany Parish Administrative Complex on Koop Drive north of Mandeville, while “Preventing Harassment and Abuse Claims in the Workplace” (May 23) will be held at the Southeastern University Center on the Hammond campus.

      Co-sponsored by the St. Tammany West Chamber of Commerce, “Employment Taxes” will be held on Wednesday, May 3, from 9 a.m. to noon. The workshop is free to chamber members and $5 for other business people.

      The workshop will present an overview of employers’ responsibility to report payroll taxes for their workers. It will include information on a variety of related topics, including federal employment tax responsibilities, employee and independent contractor, payroll records and withholding taxes, depositing and reporting employment taxes, employer’s annual federal tax forms 940, 941, 945, trust fund, failure to deposit, other penalties and interest collection process, information reporting – forms W-2/W-3, 1099MISC, 1096.

      “Business Killers,” a seminar analyzing methods of avoiding potentially disastrous misconceptions that can “kill” a business,” is scheduled for Tuesday, May 9, from 10 to noon. The seminar is free and open to the public. Topics will include buy/sell agreements, succession planning, replacement income, and tax reduction strategies.

      Also free and open to the public is “Preventing Harassment and Abuse Claims in the Workplace,” scheduled for Tuesday, May 23, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Southeastern University Center. The class will cover sexual harassment in the workplace, domestic violence and it’s effects on the workplace, civil liability, and discrimination in the workplace.
