HAMMOND – Four Southeastern Louisiana University professors and a staff member have been awarded the university’s most prestigious honor, the President’s Award for Excellence, in the areas of research, teaching, artistic activity and service.

The recipients, recognized at the university’s August 18 faculty/staff convocation, are Bryan DePoy, associate professor of music, artistic activity; Barbara Forrest, professor of philosophy, research; Dalzire “Dollie” Hebert-Crouch, director of recreation sports and wellness, staff service; Susan Pryor, associate professor of nursing, teaching; and David Ramsey, professor of general business, faculty service.

Forrest, Hebert-Crouch and Ramsey are Southeastern graduates.

Pryor is known for customizing her instructional techniques to meet the needs of each particular class or group of students. She engages students in the learning process to promote their ability to think critically and to develop the skills necessary for a lifetime of learning.

Forrest was recognized for her research in recent years into the “intelligent design” movement. She has made an international name for herself with the publication of her book, “Creationism’s Trojan Horse: The Wedge of Intelligent Design,” and for her service last year as an expert witness in the federal case of Kitzmiller et al. v. Dover Area School District. She was the 1998 recipient of the President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching.

DePoy, a trumpet virtuoso, subscribes to the theory that music instructors have a responsibility to their students to perform as often as possible, which he does with groups such as the Louisiana Philharmonic Symphony, the Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra, and the Saenger Theater Orchestra of New Orleans. DePoy also serves as the interim director of Southeastern’s new Northshore School of the Arts.

Ramsey, a professor in the College of Business, was honored for his work as an academic counselor to students, advisor for the award winning Students in Free Enterprise program, director of the College of Business Internet Resource Center, and years of editorial work on scholarly journals. Since he started coaching the Southeastern SIFE team in 1987, the organization’s teams have won more than 30 regional and national awards, earning Southeastern considerable recognition among leaders of business.

Hebert-Crouch’s contributions of time and talent have benefited both her campus and her own family. She has become involved above and beyond the call of professional duty in annual projects such as Southeastern Homecoming and Rock ‘n Roar, the American Cancer Society Relay for Life, the Sweet Sixteen girls state basketball tournament, March of Dimes, and American Heart Association, Court Appointed Special Advocates, Girls Scouts, TARC, and Holy Ghost School
