HAMMOND -- A Southeastern Louisiana University freshman from Kentwood, Kimberley Nicole Kimble, has been awarded a Gates Millennium Scholarship.

Funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the four-year award is given to 1,000 U.S. students each year. The scholarship program was founded in 1999 to encourage and support minority students in completing an undergraduate education. Special scholarships are also available to graduate students in certain disciplines.

Kimble was nominated for the scholarship last year by her high school counselor at Kentwood High School. The process involved completing a 22-page form that called for extensive essays in response to a series of questions. Last October she attended a leadership conference sponsored by the foundation for scholarship recipients.

While at Kentwood High, Kimble served as secretary of her senior class, graduated among the top of her class, and was on the cheerleading squad for two years. An accounting major at Southeastern, she is looking forward to eventually becoming a certified public accountant.

The Gates Millennium Scholarship is a significant honor for any student selected,” said Interim Vice President for Student Affairs Marvin Yates. “The application process is indeed rigorous, and those selected are expected to assume important roles as leaders in their professions and their communities. Kimberly is a true leader among her peers and is well-qualified for this recognition.”

The scholarship program is administered by the United Negro College Fund.
