HAMMOND – Nearly $5.5 million in potential scholarships to Southeastern Louisiana University over the next four years were announced at the university’s Scholars Showcase, an event designed to honor outstanding high school seniors who are considering attending the institution.

A total of 129 top high school students from 84 high schools in 27 parishes and five states attended the annual event. Southeastern President Randy Moffett told the students and parents that Southeastern, one of the first institutions in the University of Louisiana System to implement admission standards, intends “to keep raising the bar academically because our goal is to be one of the finest regional universities in the nation.”

He said that while Southeastern joins its sister institutions in “adjusting to a new sense of normalcy” following Hurricane Katrina, the university “continues to move forward in developing new programs, attracting new faculty, and focusing more than ever on our students’ success.”

Moffett said top students will be offered $1,766,000 in scholarships over the next four years through Southeastern, its foundation, and the University of Louisiana System. They also will receive special Southeastern housing scholarships and approximately $4.7 million in the state TOPS scholarship funds.

Thomas Maille of Holden High School, who is already taking Southeastern classes through the university’s “Southeastern Scholars” program, called the university’s scholarship offer “amazing. I really can’t pass on it,” said Maille, who plans to pursue a double major in political science and psychology.

A number of his peers agreed, also citing their interest in specific academic programs.

Independence High School senior Laken Schroeder said Scholars Showcase tipped the balance in her college choice, especially her conversation with Southeastern business major Mark Mathewes of Ruston. The two talked during the post-event “browse,” which gave students and parents the opportunity to visit academic and student life displays and visit one-on-one with faculty and administrators.

“I’m interested in the Honors Program,” said Schroeder, who plans to major in English education. “Mark told me in a friendly, informal manner exactly what I wanted to know. He convinced me to apply to Southeastern.”

“I always planned to go into the health care field, and this year decided on nursing,” said Tara High School senior Kennon Shutt of Baton Rouge. “ Southeastern has a very strong nursing program with a great reputation.”

“My sister goes to Southeastern and she has been telling me for two years how friendly the campus is and what a great place it is. The new housing scholarship is very attractive and I plan to use it,” said Lisa Scobel of Gretna, a student at Archbishop Blenk High School.
