Aristides Baraya, director of Southeastern Louisiana University’s Latin American Business Initiative, hands a new backpack to Douglas Medina, 10, of Kenner at Friday’s (Jan. 6) gift exchange for New Orleans area children affected by Hurricane Katrina. A member of the board of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana, Baraya helped orchestrate the gift exchange which was held around the feast of the Epiphany, a traditional time of gift-giving in Hispanic cultures. New toys, school supplies, and clothing were provided by the Kenner City Police Department and the Mary House of Washington, DC, an organization that provides services to low-income populations. Also assisting in the event were the Hispanic Apostolate of the Archdiocese of New Orleans and Catholic Charities of New Orleans.
