SOUTHEASTERN YEARBOOK EARNS NATIONAL HONOR FOR FOURTH STRAIGHT YEAR

HAMMOND -- For the fourth consecutive year, Southeastern Louisiana University's yearbook, “Le Souvenir,” has been recognized with a first-place award by the American Scholastic Press Association in New York.

The 2004 yearbook earned a total of 880 points out of a possible 1,000 points in the competition, which included yearbooks from Clemson University, American University, Michigan State and Tennessee State University.

Besides the first-place evaluation, the 2004 “Le Souvenir” earned perfect scores in general page design and creativity.

Graduate students Lee E. Lind of Hammond and Sanela Osmanovic of Sarajevo served as editor and assistant editor of the 2004 yearbook. Lind is now coordinator of Student Publications.

"Every yearbook attempts to capture in its pages the best memories of a given year," said Lind. "I believe this edition of ‘Le Souvenir’ has done more than that. It not only gives readers a record of the school year as it was then, but also gives them a glimpse into the spirit that is Southeastern."

"We embedded our souls into this book, hoping to make it our graduation present to Southeastern, a way to thank the university and all the amazing people that have influenced our lives in the past few years. They gave us unfading memories and friendship," said Osmanovic.  "It is a tremendous compliment to have this effort recognized nationally.'

In November 2005, the cover design of the 2004 ‘Le Souvenir’ received a fourth place award in the Best of Collegiate Design competition. The award-winning cover blended new design with a homage to five-hundred-year-old art. The cover depicts a drawing of the front entrance to the Pottle Music Building set on top of the text of a poem titled "To the Memory of Mr. Oldham" written by John Dryden.

"This national award is testament to the hard work, long hours and countless decisions Lee, Sana and the staff made on a daily basis," said Director of Student Publications Matthew Tarver.

"Lee and Sana blended their artistic and technical skills to create a yearbook that was well-received and extremely popular on campus," said Tarver. "Together their accomplishments have allowed Southeastern to be extremely well represented nationally over the past four or five years."

The 2003 edition of "Le Souvenir," also edited by Lind and Osmanovic, earned several top honors including a first-place standing with the American Scholastic Press Association and an Award of Excellence in the "Yearbook Yearbook" national competition.

The “Le Souvenir” staff has won 10 local, regional and national awards during the last five years.

The 2005 edition of the yearbook is now available to all currently enrolled students. Students can pick up their copies in the Student Publications office, War Memorial Student Union, room 211A. Any students interested in working on the staff of “Le Souvenir” can pick up an application in the Student Union 211A.
