HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University will celebrate the legacy of the late Civil Rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. with a candlelight processional and program on Wednesday, Jan. 18.

The theme for the event, sponsored annually by the Kappa Nu Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, is “Reaching the Mountain Top – Unity Through Diversity.”

The processional will begin at 6 p.m. at Washington Hall, said Alpha Phi Alpha’s Aron Walker of New Orleans. He said participants will walk to the War Memorial Student Union, where Alpha Phi Alpha will continue the tradition of laying a wreath at the tree planted in King's memory in the Student Union park. Shortly after the laying of the wreath, the program will begin in the Student Union Theatre.

The program speaker will be Shawn D. Wilson, a native New Orleanian and graduate of the University of Louisiana-Lafayette. Wilson is the former executive director of the Louisiana Serve Commission in the office of Lt. Governor Blanco, and also served as deputy legislative director in the Blanco Administration. He currently serves as the confidential assistant to Secretary of Transportation and is a Governor’s program administrator.

At ULL, Wilson served as Student Government president and represented more than 60,000 students on the University of Louisiana System Board.  In addition to a bachelor's degree in Urban and Regional Planning, he holds a Master of Public Administration degree from Southern University.

In 2002 he was elected as the state president of Alpha Phi Alpha,  during which time he served as the national coordinator for the Big Brothers Big Sisters Mentoring Partnership.
