SOUTHEASTERN’S WALKER JOINS UL SYSTEM BOARD -- Kay Kirkpatrick, vice president for administration and general counsel for the University of Louisiana System, administered the oath at the June 23 ULS Board of Supervisors meeting in Baton Rouge to Southeastern Louisiana University Student Government Association President Aron Walker, the new student representative on the ULS Board.      BATON ROUGE -- Aron Walker III of New Orleans, president of the Southeastern Louisiana University Student Government Association, was sworn in today (June 23) as the 2006-07 student member of the Board of Supervisors for the University of Louisiana System.

A business major concentrating in human resource management, Walker will serve as the student voice on the board that governs eight universities statewide.

“I am honored to be representing the students of the University of Louisiana System,” Walker said. “I look forward to working on the Board of Supervisors to help improve our institutions for future generations.”

His mother, Caroline Walker, joined Walker as he took the oath of office at a meeting of the ULS Board in Baton Rouge.

Board Chair Jimmy Long of Natchitoches welcomed Walker and noted that his student perspective will be helpful to fellow board members. Long also appointed Walker to serve on the Academic and Student Affairs, Grievance, and Legislation committees.

System President Sally Clausen said Walker “hit the ground running” several weeks ago as he participated in a special orientation about the system and its universities, responsibilities, rules, procedures and initiatives.  She noted that Walker also supports the system’s major initiative of service learning.

“Aron knows that volunteer service is an important part of human development in college. His leadership by example in this area should inspire others. For example, he helped produce our Extreme Spring Break homebuilding initiative to aid hurricane victims, and he is working with us to develop other service learning opportunities for our campuses and students,” said Clausen.

Active in the Southeastern SGA since 2003, Walker has served as vice president and chairman of the Appropriations Committee. He was elected president this spring. He is a former vice president of the Southeastern Black Student Union, president of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, and coordinator of Project P.U.L.L. (“Promoting Unity through Leadership and Learning”), a Southeastern project that promotes student success through mentoring, leadership development and service.

Walker is a graduate of St. Augustine High School in New Orleans.

In addition to Southeastern, the UL System is comprised of Grambling State University, Louisiana Tech University, McNeese State University, Nicholls State University, Northwestern State University, the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, and the University of Louisiana at Monroe. The system, with more than 85,000 students, is one of the largest in the nation
