Hammond High student wins Region 8 Science Fair

REGION 8 SCIENCE FAIR OVERALL WINNERS – Region 8 Science Fair Director Ana Wills, a mathematics instructor at Southeastern Louisiana University, and Dan McCarthy, dean of the College of Science and Technology, congratulate the overall winners of the fair, held March 17 at the Southeastern University Center. OUTSTANDING SECONDARY SCIENCE TEACHER – Dan McCarthy, dean of Southeastern Louisiana University’s College of Science and Technology, congratulates Hammond High School accelerated physical science teacher Rebecca Edwards of Hammond High School, who was named the Outstanding Secondary Science Teacher by the Region 8 Science Fair, held at Southeastern March 17.

 

       HAMMOND – Julius Reyes of Hammond High School took first place in the 2006 Region 8 Science Fair held at Southeastern Louisiana University March 17. For his winning project “Interval of Conversions,” which received first place honors in the senior division mathematics category, Reyes received a $500 cash prize.

       Along with first, second and third place regional winners, Reyes will advance to the state science fair at Louisiana State University.

       Second place honors went to Edward Dussom of the St. Paul School for “Creating a Microbial Fuel Cell,” which also won first place in the biochemistry category. Alyssa DeSanti of Fontainebleau High School was the third place finisher with “The Ergonomic Backpack,” the first place entry in the physics category.

       Rebecca Edwards of Hammond High School was named the Outstanding Secondary Science Teacher.

       The Region 8 fair also recognized Southeastern Louisiana University mathematics instructor Ana Wills for her past five years of service as fair director. Wills will hand over the reigns of the fair next year to Southeastern biological sciences faculty member Michaelyn Broussard.

       The Navy/Marine Corps Distinguished Achievement Awards were presented to Reyes, Dussom and senior division entries Andrew Magee and Sadie Mannino, both of Hammond High School.

       Junior Division Navy/Marine Corps awards went to Adam Chadwick, Oak Forest Academy; Randy Wills, St. Joseph Catholic School; and Emily Deas, Mary Queen of Peace Catholic School.

       The Iota Sigma Pi Women in Chemistry Award for the best project by female students in the chemistry, biochemistry and environmental science divisions went to Gillian Brownlee and Raquel Valverde, both of Fontainebleau Junior High School.

       Winners of Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry Awards for best projects in the agriculture category were Samm Laurent, Madisonville Junior High School, junior division, and Kathryn Chabaud, St. Thomas Aquinas High School, senior division.

       Charles McLin III of Nesom Middle School and Stephen Traina-Dorge of the St. Paul School received prizes from the Southeast Louisiana Area Heath Education Center for the best projects related to genetics.
