HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University has inducted 92 students, faculty and alumni into its chapter of the prestigious national honor society, Phi Kappa Phi.

To be considered for membership in Phi Kappa Phi, a student must be in the top 10 percent of the senior or graduate class or a second-semester junior in the top 7.5 percent of his/her class. Sound character is a supporting criterion. Faculty and alumni are chosen for outstanding contributions to their fields.

At the chapter’s annual induction banquet May 4, Southeastern Phi Kappa Phi honored English education major Brandi Hock of New Orleans, one of 38 students nationwide to receive a $1,000 national Phi Kappa Phi travel grant, and Michael Hall of DeRidder, the chapter’s nominee for a national Phi Kappa Phi graduate fellowship.

The honors organization recognized as Outstanding Juniors psychology major Vanessa Verberne of Loranger, College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences; general studies major Jacques Pitre of Cut Off, College of General Studies; athletic training major Jason Rodriguez of Houma, College of Nursing and Health Sciences; elementary education major Tiffany Bonvillain Whitehead of Baton Rouge, College of Education & Human Development; biology major Haley Echlin of Clinton, College of Science and Technology; and finance major Joseph Vandigo of Hammond, College of Business.

The chapter’s Outstanding Freshman Award went to accounting major Keri Rodi of Harvey, while Sandra Austin, a psychology major from Amite, received the Outstanding Honor Student award.

The initiates included Southeastern faculty members David Evenson, head of the Department of Music and Dramatic Arts; Lucia Harrison, head of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures; and Debbie Longman, associate professor of general studies.
