HAMMOND – Her many friends from campus and community are invited to a May 11 farewell reception for Southeastern Louisiana University voice professor Scharmal Schrock.

The reception is scheduled from 4-5:30 p.m. Thursday in the Student Union Theatre commons area.

Schrock, coordinator of the vocal area in the Department of Music and Dramatic Arts since 1981 and long time director of the university’s acclaimed Opera/Music Theatre Workshop, has accepted a faculty appointment at the prestigious Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University.
“Please join us in saying ‘goodbye and good luck’ to this irreplaceable member of our faculty and community,” said David Evenson, head of the Department of Music and Dramatic Arts.

Schrock will be returning to her alma mater. She received her master of music degree at Indiana University as well as a bachelor’s degree from the University of Cincinnati's College-Conservatory of Music. She also studied in Vienna and New York City and in Germany and Austria as a Fulbright Scholar.

Schrock was the 1990 recipient of Southeastern’s President's Award for Excellence in Artistic Activity and was honored for her service to the community with the Hammond Regional Arts Center Music Award.

As a teacher and director at Southeastern, Schrock shaped hundreds of young voices, introduced thousands of children to music through a lively children’s opera program; staged dozens of memorable operas, musicals and dinner theater productions; and pleased countless audiences through her students’ and her own performances.

Those performances included appearances as a recitalist throughout the United States and Europe and as a soloist with symphonies in Atlanta, Amarillo, Baton Rouge, Dallas, New Orleans, San Antonio and Shreveport. She also presented a series of master classes on American art songs and Broadway musicals at the Regional Music School in Thun, Switzerland, and was a member of the faculty at the Summer Music Theatre Institute at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

Schrock is an active member and adjudicator of the National Association of Teachers of Singing and Music Teachers National Association. She is also a member of the National Opera Association.
