Registration underway for Southeastern Music Festival and 'Academic Adventure' summer camps

HAMMOND – Registration is underway for the 2006 Southeastern Music Festival and other “Academic Adventures” summer camps at Southeastern Louisiana University.
The Southeastern Music Festival, sponsored by the university’s Community Music School, is scheduled for weekdays July 10-21 at the university’s Ralph R. Pottle Music Building. SMF is open to students ages 8-17 (third grade through high school), said Patrick Tuck, director of the Southeastern Music Festival.
“Academic Adventures” features approximately a dozen camp sessions in June and July focusing on sciences, foreign languages, art, music, and writing. Camps will be held on Southeastern’s main campus in Hammond and at the new Livingston Literacy and Technology Center in Walker. Sports and recreation camps are also offered through Southeastern Continuing Education, (985) 549-2301.
The Southeastern Music Festival is now in its 13th year. “Participants receive private lessons, large ensemble experience, concerts, master classes, chamber music studies, and music rudiment and theory classes all provided in a supportive and encouraging environment,” Tuck said.
CMS Director Kenneth Boulton said each of SMF’s six instruction areas will have its own coordinator and schedule of activities, which will run concurrently in the morning.
“It will be like having six camps in one,” Boulton said. “In the afternoon, we will become one big camp. Students will receive theory and other academic music instruction, participate in the festival choir, and enjoy recreation activities such as swimming and basketball.”
SMF also offers evening recitals at the end of each day. “These programs feature individual participants and SMF chamber ensembles,” said Tuck. “ Performers audition daily to be included on the evening recital program. The festival culminates in a gala concert, featuring the SMF Concert Band and the SMF Choir along with SMF chamber ensembles and individual participants.”
Southeastern faculty serving as area coordinators are Tuck, music theory area; Richard Schwartz, SMF Concert Band, band instrument area; Yakov Voldman, SMF Chamber Orchestra, orchestral instrument area; Raisa Voldman, piano area; and Patrick Kerber, guitar area. An alumnus, Amy Prats, will head the voice area and the SMF Chamber Choir.
For the first time, SMF is offering performance scholarship opportunities to students in grades nine-12. To apply, students should submit a CD or cassette recording of one musical performance on their chosen instrument (or voice) along with their festival application.
The festival offers two tuition options. For $350, students receive both lunch and dinner; for $300, students receive dinner only, and parents may send a sack lunch with their child.
“In both cases, students will enjoy the full range of musical activities that has become a hallmark of this festival,” Tuck said.
A $75 non-refundable deposit is due with registration materials by June 23, with the balance due on the first day of camp. A $25 late fee will be assessed after the deadline.
The fee covers tuition, t-shirts, recreation, meals, liability insurance, and campus health services. Families enrolling more than one child in the all-day session will receive a $50 discount per student on the registration fee.
Students can also choose to participate in morning sessions only, 8 a.m.-noon. The cost for the morning-only session is $150 with a $40 non-refundable deposit.

Academic Adventures camps at the Southeastern Lab School are “Go Wild,” June 12-18; “Spanish,” June 19-23; “Space and Rocketry,” June 26-30; “Physics Grand Prix” and “Young Writer’s Camp,” July 17-21; “International Languages,” July 24-28; and “Gizmo’s Robot Factory,” July 31-Aug. 4.
Sessions of “Spanish” and “Go Wild!” will also be held at the Livingston Center, June 12-16 and July 24-28, respectively.
