Math professor Randall Wills receives MAA teaching award

HAMMOND – Randall Wills, associate professor of mathematics at Southeastern Louisiana University, is the recipient of the Louisiana/Mississippi Mathematical Association of America Award for Distinguished College or University Teaching of Mathematics.
Wills received the honor at the spring 2006 meeting of the Louisiana/Mississippi Section of the MAA. He will be the section’s nominee for the Deborah and Franklin Haimo Awards for Distinguished College or University Teaching of Mathematics in 2007. Up to three winners at the section level are chosen for the prestigious national award.
Wills, a member of the Southeastern faculty for 17 years, is a graduate of Lake Forest College and the University of Iowa, where he earned his doctorate in applied mathematical science in 1990.
“Mathematics has always been a favorite subject of mine,” Wills said. “Everything about math intrigued me, and I really loved solving problems and puzzles as a child. It is this love of solving problems and discovering new things that led me to study mathematics. I still love solving math problems and making discoveries in different areas of mathematics.”
The Mathematical Association of America is the largest professional society focusing on mathematics accessible at the undergraduate level. Members include university, college, and high school teachers, graduate and undergraduate students, pure and applied mathematicians, computer scientists, statisticians, and others who are interested in the mathematical sciences.
Nominees for the MAA award must be a college or university teacher assigned at least half-time during the academic year to teaching a mathematical science in a public or private college or university, have at least five years of teaching experience in a mathematical science, and be a member of the Mathematical Association of America.
