HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University students have until Dec. 8 to apply for Student Government Association scholarships for 2007 summer study abroad programs, said Charles A. Dranguet, interim director of the university’s International Initiatives Office.

SGA is providing more than $76,000 to fund 90 study abroad scholarships in 2007, said Dranguet. For the first time, freshmen qualify for the scholarship.

He said students who wish to apply for the scholarships will find information and application forms online at www.selu.edu/studyabroad.

Meanwhile, the International Initiatives Office is accepting applications now for the 2007 programs in Costa Rica, Austria, Spain, Ecuador, France, Honduras, Italy and Germany. The application deadline is Feb. 28, 2007, but students should apply as early as possible, Dranguet stressed. Financial aid can be applied to study abroad expenses.

Application packages and additional information can be found online, while questions about the programs should be directed to the International Initiatives Office, located in East Stadium, room 102, 985-549-2385, studyabroad@selu.edu. Students can also contact each program’s faculty coordinator.

Through the summer programs, students can earn up to six academic credits studying business, sociology, criminal justice and tropical ecology in Costa Rica; nursing in Honduras; Italian language and English literature in Italy; German language, culture and music in Cologne, Germany; Spanish language, history and political science in Valencia, Spain; French language and culture, and biology in La Douce, France; Spanish, sociology, anthropology and biology in Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands; and political science and history in Salzburg, Austria.

Program costs include tuition, lodging and some meals, site visits, and lectures by top local experts. The International Initiatives Office and some of the university’s top faculty coordinate the programs, Dranguet said.
