HAMMOND – Southeastern Louisiana University’s Contemporary Art Gallery will feature exhibits by visiting artists and Visual Art Department senior students during the fall 2006 semester.

First on display at the gallery, located on the east side of Strawberry Stadium, is a national exhibition entitled “Religion and Personal Identity,” scheduled Sept. 14-Oct. 29. The exhibit, which includes the work of 15 artists, explores the personal, political and social affects of religion on lives and worldviews. According to Gallery Director Dale Newkirk, the exhibit is intended to question and challenge contemporary notions of religious identity. The artworks will showcase a broad range of styles and media including painting, photography, jewelry, video and sculpture.

A video installation by Martijn van Wagtendonk entitled “Her Flock” will be featured in the gallery Sept. 14-Oct. 29. Wagtendonk is a professor of digital art at the University of Georgia. His video is made up of a mechanical representation of birds in flight.

The artist describes the artwork as, “A group of birds (made of paper and steel wire) sitting quietly, each on a pedestal. The moment a viewer approaches the flock, the birds begin flapping their wings to take off. They move upwards, where they remain in flight until the area is cleared of all viewers.” The artwork creates the feeling of walking into an open field and surprising birds into flight.

Both exhibits are part of Southeastern’s annual arts festival, Fanfare. An opening reception is scheduled for Sept. 14 from 5-7 p.m. at the gallery. Van Wagtendonk will present a lecture at 4 p.m. Additional visiting artists will make presentations throughout the run of the exhibit.

An opening reception for the fall 2006 Senior Exhibition will be Thursday, Nov. 9, from 5-7 p.m. at the Contemporary Art Gallery. Art students who plan to graduate in December will have their artwork displayed through Dec. 1.

The Contemporary Art Gallery hours are Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. On Wednesday the gallery is open until 8 p.m. The gallery will be closed Nov. 22-26 for the Thanksgiving holiday.
