HAMMOND – Preparation for the construction of a new multi-level parking facility is temporarily impacting existing parking on the southern end of Southeastern Louisiana University’s campus this week.

Construction crews and their equipment are occupying approximately 200 of the 547 spaces in the university’s West Stadium parking lot as they drive test pylons to prepare for construction, scheduled to begin in mid-November, university officials said.

To compensate for the inconvenience to students who normally use the Galloway Drive and West Stadium/Alumni field lots, students this week can park in any student lot with the exception of residence hall parking. University Police Department will not issue citiations unless a driver is parked illegally (on grass or in loading zones, for example) or in handicapped, faculty/staff or residence hall parking areas, university officials said.

Tickets previously issued this week will be voided, they added.

When the parking facility construction begins in mid-November, approximately 300 of the West Stadium/Alumni Field and Galloway Drive parking areas will be blocked off for the duration of the project, said Vice President for Student Affairs Marvin Yates.

However, he said the demolition of Livingston Hall on Texas Ave. will allow the university to double the size of the existing parking lot there, effectively balancing out the loss of parking due to the construction.

“We will encourage students to take advange of the available parking at the Livingston Hall lot; however, there are other spaces that also can be used, including parking around and adjacent to the University Center on North Campus, at Cefalu Coliseum and at Textbook Rentals,” Yates said.

“We hope students will be patient with what is going to be a temporary inconvenience for a permanent improvement,” Yates said.
