HAMMOND – Southeastern Louisiana University management professor David Wyld, internationally recognized for his work in the emerging technology of radio frequency identification (RFID), has been selected to receive a new national award presented by the e-Gov Institute and Federal Computer Week magazine.

Wyld, Maurin Professor of Management and director of Southeastern’s EMBA Program and Strategic e-Commerce/e-Government Initiative, is one of 53 individuals nationwide selected for the “Rising Star Award,” which recognizes “tomorrow’s leaders and decision makers in the government IT community,” according to Federal Computer Week.

He will receive the award at a gala in Washington, D.C., on Oct. 12, and will be profiled in the magazine’s October issue.

Nominations for the award were solicited from Federal Computer Week readers, members of the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association (AFCEA), and the general public.

"We are proud to have Dr. Wyld on our faculty,” said Randy Settoon, dean of the College of Business. “He has become an internationally known expert in the area of government information technology and his research he has brought national publicity to Southeastern's College of Business.”

Settoon said Wyld’s research on RFID technology has been published in numerous academic and trade journals and that his whitepapers on the topic, sponsored by companies such as PriceWaterHouseCoopers and IBM, have been widely distributed among federal agencies.

Wyld, who earned his doctorate in management from the University of Memphis in 1993, has written more than 100 journal articles on contemporary management issues that have appeared in leading business, public policy, health care, and education journals. He has also presented more than 120 papers at professional conferences, garnering 10 best paper awards.

His report for the IBM Center for the Business of Government, "RFID: The Right Frequency for Government," has become the most downloaded report of the more than 150 published by IBM since 1999. The report has been downloaded more than 50,000 times in less than a year.

In addition to the IBM study, Wyld has written extensively about opportunities and issues related to RFID, which is being touted as the successor to bar code technology and is expected to revolutionize supply chain management. Predicting that the use of RFID will become common within a decade, Wyld and faculty colleagues Michael Budden, Mike Jones, André Honoreé and Rusty Juban have examined application and challenges in areas such as the pharmaceutical supply chain, animal identification, the postal system and small parcel markets, and even in shoplifting, industrial espionage, sports, the American wine industry, and tracking Mad Cow disease.

Wyld has also extensively researched the issue of reverse auctions in government procurement. Earlier this year, he was invited by the Louisiana Advisory Commission on Intergovernmental Relations to make a presentation on the subject to state, parish and local government officials in Baton Rouge. His presentation illustrated the potential for Louisiana to follow the lead of other governments in implementing reverse auctions in procurement operations to save taxpayer dollars.

Wyld is the author of the book International Literacy: A Geographic Briefing for Today's Business Students. He was the 1998 recipient of Southeastern’s prestigious "President's Award for Excellence” in the area of research, and was named outstanding teacher in the College of Business in 2002.

In addition to his teaching and research, Wyld has served as a consultant to major corporations on a wide range of topics. He has participated extensively in delivering college classes to non-traditional students in divergent settings, teaching in Executive MBA programs and working with emerging on-line teaching technologies.
