HAMMOND – Southeastern Louisiana University’s Sports Management Association and Special Olympics Louisiana are teaming up to host the inaugural Reaching Americans with Disabilities (R.A.D.) Rally on May 1.
“The rally will give individuals with and without disabilities insight into job seeking, relationships, people-first language, the eradication of the r-word, money skills, modern technology, and much more,” said Ashley Bowers, kinesiology and health studies assistant professor. “All persons with and without disabilities are encouraged to attend.”
Scheduled on Southeastern’s main campus in the Kinesiology and Health Studies Building from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., the rally will begin with breakfast at 8:30 a.m., followed by the keynote speaker at 9:30 a.m. and speaker sessions at 10:15 a.m. The day’s activities conclude with a picnic lunch and raffle, Bowers said.
“The keynote speaker is Katie Uter, a Southeastern graduate, former Miss Fitness Universe and vice-president of a corporate wellness company,” she said. “Southeastern Head Football Coach Mike Lucas is also scheduled as a speaker, and there will be a sports raffle with items such as a signed Saints football, Hornets merchandise and much more. All proceeds raised will be donated to the Boys and Girls Club of America.”
Early registration is $7 and runs through April 28. After the deadline, registration is $10. Registration covers the cost of breakfast and a picnic lunch.
Registration forms are available in the main office of the Kinesiology and Health Studies Building. Both the registration form and fee should be sent to Bower’s office at the Department of Kinesiology and Health Studies, SLU 10845, Hammond, La., 70402.
