HAMMOND – The Louisiana Small Business Development Center (LSBDC) at Southeastern Louisiana University will present a free workshop to help new businesses hire their first employees.

Scheduled Tuesday, Feb. 10, and sponsored by the St. Tammany Economic Development Foundation, the event will be held at the St. Tammany Administrative Complex, located at 21454 Koop Drive, from 12 – 1:30 p.m., with networking beginning at 11:30 a.m. Attendees are welcome to bring a bag lunch.

Assistant Director of Southeastern's SBDC Sandy Summers said the class will outline the processes that businesses should follow when hiring their first employees. Topics include advertising for the job, interviewing potential candidates, hiring the right person, collecting the required paperwork and more.

"Melissa Elliott of Express Employment Professionals - Northshore, an employment agency, is the guest speaker for the workshop," said Summers. "She opened the North Shore/Hammond Express franchise in 2001 and has seen steady growth in the local market, including the Greater New Orleans area. For 2012, 'CityBusiness' ranked her Express franchise as the largest employment agency in the Greater New Orleans area by number of placements."

"Melissa's career has always been focused on sales, service, marketing and business consulting. Her background allows her to understand that human resources must positively impact the bottom line of any company," Summers added. "Her goal is to positively impact every business that she assists and to help people with their careers."

There is no cost to attend the event; however, registration is encouraged, as seating is limited. For more information or to register, contact LSBDC Southeastern at 985-549-3831 or lsbdc.slu@lsbdc.org. Online registration is available at www.lsbdc.org.
