‘Let's Talk: Art’ series begins Sept. 30

HAMMOND – Illustrations will be the focus of this year’s first “Let’s Talk: Art” series
lecture set for this Wednesday, Sept. 30, at 5 p.m. at the Hammond Regional Arts Center
(HRAC), located at 217 E. Thomas Street across from the Columbia Theatre.
“Let’s Talk Art” is sponsored jointly by the Southeastern Louisiana University
Department of Fine and Performing Arts, the Hammond Regional Arts Center, and the
Friends of Sims Library,
Eric Johnson, director of Sims Library, will discuss “George Macy: The Art of
the Illustrated Book.” In the first half of the 20th century, George Macy inaugurated
two subscription series of literary classics designed and illustrated by the top artists
of the period. The history and importance of these series will be highlighted, featuring
the work of such artists as Picasso, Matisse, Derain, Rockwell, and many others.
All lectures are free and open to the public. Future talks are scheduled as follows:
• Wednesday, Oct. 14: “Robert Rauschenberg: It All Begins on the Street!”
by Dr. Irene Nero, 5 p.m., HRAC
• Tuesday, Nov. 10: “You Got That Where?” by Rebecca Burt, 5 p.m., HRAC
• Wednesday, Dec. 2: “From the Church Wall to Under the Tree: Images of the
Nativity through the Ages” by Dr. Timothy Silva, 5 p.m., St. Albert Catholic Student
