HAMMOND – The Women Mean Business Conference, hosted annually by the Louisiana Small Business Development Center at Southeastern Louisiana University and Tangipahoa Professional Women (TPW), has helped raise scholarship funds to create the TPW Scholarship.
Established in 2011, the scholarship program is also funded through local donations.
"This year 10 scholarships valued at $1,000 each will be awarded to deserving women in Tangipahoa Parish who are pursuing higher education and advancement in the workforce," said Sandy Summers, assistant director of the LSBDC. "Women attending a standard college, university, vocational or technical college in fall 2013 are invited to apply, as well as women continuing their education for professional reasons."
Summers said application packets must include a complete scholarship application filled out honestly and accurately and signed by the student. If the applicant is 18 or younger, an additional signature by a parent or guardian is required. Applicants must also submit a personal essay of 150 words or less, two separate recommendation forms from non-family community members, such as colleagues, counselors, teachers, church pasters,  or employers, and a copy of a college acceptance letter or proof of registration.
Applications are available at www.tangipw.org. Applications and supporting documents must be postmarked by April 15, 2013 and mailed to Tangipahoa Professional Women, P.O. Box 1630, Ponchatoula, LA, 70454. Scholarships will be awarded at the Tangipahoa Professional Women's monthly luncheon on June 26, 2013.
The Women Mean Business Conference provides high impact strategies to help women of all ages survive and thrive individually and professionally, Summers said. This year's conference is scheduled March 14 at Twelve Oaks on Southeastern's campus. Registration for the event is available at www.tangipw.org or lsbdc.slu@lsbdc.org.
