Early Childhood Education, Grades PK-3

Students in the Early Childhood Education program at Southeastern develop effectiveness in communication, leadership and other skills necessary for teaching in the area of early childhood education. The curriculum requires a solid background of child development and instructional methodology for students as well as essential content courses in math, science and the humanities. A strong emphasis is placed on relevant field experiences throughout the program, and students gain the knowledge, skills and dispositions needed to have a positive impact on student achievement in grades PK through 3.

  • The TeachLivE virtual-rehearsal classroom featuring real-time avatars with unique characteristics is available for students to practice classroom management, pedagogy and content teaching skills in a virtual environment

  • Service-learning opportunities such as the highly acclaimed Early Childhood EXPO in collaboration with the Louisiana Children's Discovery Center

  • A variety of field experiences to prepare candidates for a successful teaching career at the appropriate level

Program Requirements

  • Total semester hours required: 120
  • Approximately 110 hours of field experience prior to student teaching
  • Pass all parts of the PRAXIS Core: Pre-Professional Skills Test in Reading, Writing and Mathematics
  • Have a 2.75 cumulative or degree grade point average and a 2.75 cumulative or degree grade point average in work completed at Southeastern
  • Complete and earn a grade of "C" or better in all required professional courses in Education and Educational Psychology
  • Complete and earn a grade of "C" or better in all required courses in first teaching fields (identified on the curriculum sheet)
  • Pass PRAXIS II examinations in Principles of Learning and Teaching and Content Specialty Area Tests
  • Complete and earn a grade of "B" or better in Education 202
  • Successfully complete portfolio submissions during the program
  • Successfully complete student teaching and year-long residency
