Trilogy

A new work of art recently was installed on Southeastern's campus outside the Kinesiology and Health Studies Building. The statue, "Trilogy," is aptly named for the three studies of movement the work represents, welcoming students who are studying exercise science, physical education, nursing and related subjects.

Thanks to a bill passed by the Louisiana State Legislature several years ago, 1 percent of the overall budget to build a state-funded facility must be used for artwork to be displayed at the new building. "Trilogy" was financed by the funding to build the new Kinesiology and Health Studies Building.

According to the artist, Louisianan Russell Whiting, "Trilogy" is stacked vertically to represent the architecture of the building. Additionally, the bottom figure depicts a walking pose, the middle figure depicts a hanging pose and the top figure depicts a triumphant pose while holding wings that symbolize the School of Nursing, which is housed in the building.

Whiting's method of working steel is a product of his involvement and experience in the oil and ship-building industry of Louisiana. The sculpture was carved by oxy-acetylene torch to leave signature textures of gouges and deep lines with the occasional plane (untouched) surface of the plate.
