     HAMMOND -- Elementary education major Brittany Byers of Ponchatoula and English education major Alicia Oalmann of Tickfaw have been named the Outstanding Student Teachers in Southeastern Louisiana University’s College of Education and Human Development.

     Byers and Oalmann received their awards at the college’s annual honors convocation on April 26. They were selected from among five nominees, also including Betsy Bordelon of LaPlace, Breigh Rainey of Gonzales and Anna Temples of State Line.

     At the 11 a.m. ceremony in the Cate Teacher Education Center Kiva, the college also recognized as its outstanding alumnus Louis Joseph, who is retiring as superintendent of the Tangipahoa Parish School System.

     Joseph received his master’s degree and “plus-30” from Southeastern in 1974 and 1976, respectively. He began his more than three-decade career in education at Westside Middle School in Amite, where he taught for six years before moving as principal to Hammond Eastside Elementary.

     In 1990 Joseph joined the school system’s administration as supervisor for child welfare and attendance. He advanced to other administrative positions, including administrative director of school administration and assistant superintendent of administration and staff development, before being chosen as superintendent in 2003. 

     A Viet Nam veteran who served as a paratrooper with the 173rd Airborne, Joseph also served in the Louisiana Army National Guard’s 205th Engineering Battalion for 35 years and was awarded the Army Achievement Medal, Army Commendation Medal, and the Legion of Merit. He has also been an active member of the governing boards of Olive Baptist Church, First Community Bank, and the Louisiana Association of School Executives. 

     Also at the honors convocation, the college recognized Southeastern Laboratory School art teacher Denise Tullier-Holly who was named 2007 National Elementary Art Educator of the Year by the National Art Education Association.

     The college also announced the recipients of departmental honors, scholarships, and grants and new members of the Phi Kappa Phi, Kappa Delta Pi, and Phi Alpha honor societies and Southeastern’s own Thirteen Club honor society.

     GONZALES – Breigh Rainey, Exemplary Graduate in Elementary Education
